Briefly Describe Your Organization's Philosophy Towards Patient Care
Healing in the broadest sense. These powerful words encapsulate the Mercy Health System mission and our organization's commitment to our patients and community members. Healing in the broadest sense is what our 3,856 employees, who we call partners, strive for each day.

But what does "healing in the broadest sense" truly mean? It means promoting physical, emotional and spiritual healing. Encouraging greater family unity. Helping patients and loved ones gain acceptance of a medical condition. Providing compassionate support.

Mercy partners give of themselves to serve our patients and the community. Our innovative services and committed professionals, and our dedication to community outreach and to meeting the needs of the underserved, have led to Mercy's incredible transformation over the last 18 years from a stand-alone hospital to a vertically integrated health system with 64 facilities serving 24 communities throughout southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois.

In 1989, Mercy had 89,000 patient visits a year and employed 589 individuals, none of whom were employed physicians. Mercy now sees over 1,000,000 patients annually, and employs 3,856 partners, 285 of whom are employed physicians. Mercy has become the largest employer in Rock County, and has added nearly $1.1 billion in industry economic sales, which has created an additional 1,200 jobs in our Wisconsin and Illinois service area, beyond the almost 3,300 new jobs at Mercy. Truly, Mercy has been a major economic engine for over the last two decades.

This growth can be contributed to Mercy's transformation into a vertically integrated health care delivery system organized to provide a continuum of care to our communities. Today, Mercy operates a 240-bed hospital in Janesville, Wisconsin; a six-bed hospital in Lake Geneva, WI; and a 32-bed hospital in Harvard, Illinois. Our hospital locations reflect only one part of the integrated delivery system. Mercy provides services that span four core service areas, including hospital-based services, clinic-based services, post-acute care and retail services, and insurance products. These four core service areas make up our comprehensive, vertically integrated delivery system, and integrated delivery is what makes Mercy unique in serving the full range of health care needs of our patients.

As we've grown in size, we have increased the breadth and depth of care provided to our patients. We continually strive to improve the quality of care received, stretching ourselves to exceed the most stringent standards. We are committed to providing our patients with the latest technology, the best medical teams and expert, compassionate care as we work to fulfill our mission of providing exceptional health care services resulting in healing in the broadest sense.

Company In-Depth
Company History

Mercy Hospital was founded in 1883, when Dr. Henry Palmer opened Janesville's first hospital. By 1903, the hospital had become such a busy enterprise that the physicians contacted the Sisters of Mercy in Chicago about operating the hospital for them. In 1907, the Sisters purchased the 30-bed Palmer Memorial Hospital and renamed it Palmer Memorial Mercy Hospital. In 1913, the name Mercy Hospital was adopted.

In 1972, control of the Mercy Charitable Corporation was transferred from the Sisters of Mercy to a self-perpetuating volunteer board of directors. By 1989, Mercy Hospital was severly losing market share. Area residents largely perceived it as a primary care hosital, and looked to Madison and Milwaukee for specialized care. The hospital's volunteer board of directors then named Javon R. Bea as the new president and CEO, and Mercy began its nationally acclaimed transformation to today's vertically integrated health system, with 300 physicians, more than 60 new specialty services, and 64 state-of-the-art facilities throughout 24 southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois communities. Gross revenues have increased 12-fold over the last 18 years.
