Position Highlights
SUMMARY:
The Physical Therapist in the Physical Therapy Department organizes and conducts medically prescribed physical therapy programs in the hospital, outpatient services and outreach sites to restore function and prevent disability. Helping patients reach his/her maximum performance and assume a place in society while learning to live within the limits of his/her capabilities. Performs all duties and responsibilities in such a way as to demonstrate and support the hospital's goal of Service Excellence in patient care by facilitating positive employee and client relations and supporting department goals. Provides care/service in accordance with regulatory and accrediting agencies.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:
- Demonstrate Professional Accountability: performing technical procedures necessary for the job responsibilities of a Licensed Physical Therapist in a safe, effective, efficient, legal and professional manner. This includes communication, mentoring, and acceptance of criticism, professional development, participation in organizational activities and stewardship of the hospital’s resources.
- Demonstrate accountability, attendance, and reliability: Actively working to create an environment based on trust, freeing people to perform to their maximum potential, and promoting individual and mutual accountability. TECHNICAL/PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCIES:
- Demonstrates the ability to plan therapy programs that are age appropriate for each patient utilizing appropriate treatment techniques and modalities.
- Apply diagnostic and prognostic muscle, nerve, joint and functional ability tests; utilize results in developing treatment plan.
- Demonstrates the functional use of adaptive equipment while conducting patient treatments such as use of wheelchairs, braces, canes, crutches, prosthetic and orthotic devices.
- Provides instruction in posture control and therapeutic procedures to be continued by the patient.
- Adapt conventional physical therapy techniques to meet the needs of patients unable to comprehend verbal commands or voluntarily carry out a regime of therapeutic exercises.
- Assists in department QA reports/records as directed.
- Assists in organization, education, and evaluation of professional and pre-professional students as requested.
- Maintain equipment to ensure proper functioning. Requisition supplies equipment.
- Utilize supplies, linen and utilities in an economical manner.
- Assist in program development for the department.
- Conduct or participate in training medical and nursing personnel and other workers in physical therapy techniques and objectives.
- Support philosophy of patient focused care when working those units.
- Support philosophy of guest relations with coworkers and project a positive image of St. Michael’s Hospital when dealing with physicians, patients, family members and the community.
- Maintains professional appearance and conduct.
- Maintains confidentiality of patient information.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Coordinates patient care and delegates activities to Nurse Aides and other health care team members.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Graduate from an accredited college program of Physical Therapy as established by the American Physical Therapy Association. Minimum education: Bachelor’s Degree of comparable certification in Physical Therapy. Previous work experience as a physical therapist is desirable. New graduates welcome to apply.
