Job Duties
Catawba Hospital is a state-operated psychiatric facility under the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services, providing specialized care to adult and geriatric individuals with serious mental health needs in a structured, therapeutic environment. In this role, the Physical Therapist will deliver programming, evaluations, and treatments designed to improve functional outcomes, working collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams to develop and implement individualized care plans within established timeframes. Responsibilities include maintaining a safe and therapeutic environment, redirecting patient behaviors as needed, and communicating patient progress, concerns, and behavioral changes to treatment teams and leadership. The Physical Therapist is also responsible for ensuring high-quality, timely documentation in the Electronic Health Record, including assessments, treatment plans, interdisciplinary notes, and incident reporting. Additional duties involve educating patients, families, and staff on rehabilitation and therapy practices, supporting continuity of care, and contributing to training initiatives. The position requires ongoing compliance with licensure and certification standards, adherence to safety protocols, reliable attendance, and active participation in a professional, respectful work environment that promotes effective communication, teamwork, and positive patient outcomes.
Minimum Qualifications
Current licensure as a Physical Therapist in the Commonwealth of Virginia, or eligibility to obtain licensure prior to employment.
Knowledge of principles and practices of recreational/physical therapy; ability to assess, plan, implement, evaluate, and document related to programs for individuals referred to groups.
Ability to collaborate with peer therapists, interdisciplinary treatment teams, and demonstrate positive communication skills
Additional Considerations
Prior experience working in a psychiatric, behavioral health, or inpatient hospital setting.
Experience providing physical therapy services to adult and geriatric populations.
Previous experience in a state facility or other public sector healthcare environment.
